Why are their dresses so big in the movie sense and sensibility (the one with Kate Winslet)?

The dresses were large because that was the style at the time. The women of that time wanted to have a big poofy skirt part of the dress. Looking skinny was only essential in the waist area. So they looked skinny on top and poofy on the bottom.
