Is there any new developments on dark matter/energy?

From what I remember from a recent doentary, that fascinated me, dark matter is only recognisable by its gravitational pull holding the galaxies in place? Are there any authors that you could recommend that explain the most recent theories of the universe in a laypersons' vocabulary. Thanks.
