Why do television shows overemphasize relationships?

First let me be clear. I am not anti-gay, and have lots of gay friends. What am I against? Political agendas of any kind in my entertainment and that includes what some might clify as a civil rights agenda. Being that only 1-5% of the population are ual, why does almost every television show I watch turn one of its average of five main characters into a political gay rights agenda? That is grossly overemphasizing the natural ratio from less than 5% to almost 20%, all the while abusing the power they have in altering opinions with subliminal story lines. How do you feel about this?
