Why does my ipod 30GB clic charge & show up on i tunes(got latest version)but my new nano charges only?

usb cable ok as works with mine & my daughters ipods but nano shows it's charging but won't appear in i tunes Diagnostics in help on i tunes says no ipod connected when clearly it is as i can see battery charging and it worked ok a couple of weeks ago.
